The Joy of Yoga – Becoming a Stronger, Healthier, Happier You!

When I decided to take yoga, I confess, I was afraid and nervous to try it. I was afraid because it was a long drive from my country house to the yoga centre in the big city. I was nervous because twenty years ago I had a car accident that left me with some injuries
Twenty years later the injuries from that accident turned into arthritis and other potentially limiting ailments. I thought I would not be able to do postures and exercises. I thought I would be embarrassed. I thought I was in such bad shape that I would never finish the program and become a teacher. I thought that everyone would be staring at me because of my lack of ability.
I had only taken yoga once in my life and that was about 13 years ago and I did 10 classes. I did make the decision to become a yoga teacher and did so on a day when my “ailments” were challenging me.
I learnt that yoga is a great way to help your whole body because it helps you strengthen your core. When your spine is strong and healthy it ensures that you are strong and healthy. When our body is functioning well, your mind is functioning well. It is that simple.
I found my yoga experience to be life altering as well. Many people say that they can feel the difference in one session. It took me longer, but right from the beginning, I knew that I was on the right path. Nothing else that I have studied offers the complete package off well being that yoga does. It can help you feel great, physically, emotionally and spiritually. The stretching and breathing is wonderful and relaxes you on all levels.
I discovered that I had nothing to be afraid of. After a period of time, I was no longer afraid to drive the distance and drive downtown. I did not always like it but I was no longer afraid. I was no longer nervous. I could do the postures. Not always right away or always perfect but I could do them. I became more flexible and that helped as well. I was no longer embarrassed.
Yoga teaches you acceptance and to be non judgemental and the class and the teacher were very supportive and loving. Also, I was not the only one that had challenges. It was not always about me. No one stared at me. I discovered that despite me not knowing anything about the program I signed up for; it was the perfect yoga for me. Kundalini is the yoga of awareness and focuses a lot on spirituality and meditation. Yoga encourages and helps you look at life in a positive light; and really what more can you ask for?
