Has this ever happened to you? You are outside in your underwear and rubber boots, at night, in the middle of an argument between wild cats and racoons and suddenly the power goes out?

You live in the country so there are no streetlights; you are totally in the dark. You scream and your husband, dogs and cats are snoring so loud that they don’t hear you.

No? Probably it is just me, but I am sure you have had similar things happen that are just as nerve wrecking and stressful. Of course this does not happen to me very often, it is an occasional, or in this instance, a onetime event.

Many of us are able to cope and adapt with the small and occasional big stressors in life. But sometimes, many of us, will have things happen that will ultimately be the “icing on the cake”; the thing that finally pushes us over the edge.

This does not happen overnight of course.  Sometimes you see it coming and sometimes you don’t.  Continued high stress that is not dealt with can lead to emotional and physical break down.  We often see the stories on the “net” or “tv” everyday that someone famous has had a breakdown.

It seems to be quite dramatic and no one has seen it coming, not to that extent.  Scarier is that it has also happened to someone we know, maybe it was even us.

Is there a way to prevent this from happening? From our lives unravelling in front of us?  Of course! You can learn how to identify if and when you are at risk and how to deal with stress effectively, both short term and long term.
