Managing Grief – Finding the Light in the Darkness!

managing-griefI have always heard “everyone handles grief differently.”  While this statement may be true, at the end of the day you are still sad, still emotionally drained and, still grieving. So while we all may handle it differently, in the end we are all the same – devastated by a loss.  A loss so great sometimes, you wonder will I ever be the same again, will I ever be happy again, will life ever be the same.

Grief happens when something ends; something that was important to you. The end of a marriage, end of a job, end of a career, or the biggest ending – death. Often when we were expecting something to end, when it actually ends, the ending is still grieved. The knowing, the expecting, the waiting, does not prepare us for what eventually is going to happen. People say, “at least you had to time to prepare”.  But really, are you ever prepared? Are you every ready to cope with the end of something? Like getting divorced? Like having a parent die? Everything changes, you are in agonizing grief, and somehow life continues around you like nothing has happened.

There are many phases we pass through when we grieve.  The length of time, the emotions we feel and the intensity varies for everyone.  We will all face finality, endings, and loss, whatever you may want to name it.  How we cope with it, how we get through it, what makes us continue on, is the key to our own longevity and survival. It may seem like nothing will help you get through it. It is almost like you are in another dimension, it is somehow surreal. Almost like you are dreaming and watching your life, your new changed life play out in front of you.  It can be unsettling unnerving, but eventually things will be better. It will be different from before, but you can go on to have a good life. Life changes, evolves, we lose people, pets and positions that are important to us, life goes on.

I have always heard “what does not kill you makes you stronger.”  I believe this to be true.
